Yo, just roots person- I find myself in complete agreement with you. I found myself balking upon listening to the NPR report and their designated music authority/critic. But, you know, the subject is pop and what appeals to the millions often does...

Hey Campers- Happy Halloween, at the risk of overkill, here in this saturated time and place, with the omnipresent keep-it-kommercial ghost of HALLOWEEN PRESENT always, ahem, present. What a misery, altho the little ones/the young ones who show up...

So, how come? How come there is SO LITTLE DIALOGUE on this this wave length? Has everyone gone to the moon? Damn, but it's lonely, you know, feelin' like you are talkin' to yo'self .... But hey, pilgrims... i shall forge ahead, in the hopes that m...

Hey, campers- Some of of the precious few of you engaged in the pleasure of singing in the gospel choir this past summer under the warm tutelage of Valerie Joi Fiddmont. And some of you caught the Friday night perfomance of the Gospel Choir in the...

Hey Old Son- Thanks, Alphonse, for YOUR response. My favorite chords in the tune, as sung by the Reverend Burke, are the F#m and G#m following the E in the third line of each verse... making it sound oh so much like the Memphis-in-my-mind, if you ...

Hey Tim - sorry for the 'radio silence' - you had it right in that the day job had me cornered! Thanks Justin for letting me know about this. These are very cool lyrics and I will definitely work on some music to do them justice! I'm thinking this...

Well Terrapin, He just played a show at my house this weekend... I expect to chat with him soon. I shall ask. My guess is that he is unaware that "That's Why Were Here In Memphis" has anything to do with him so he may not have seen it... Lets find...

Justin- In critical times, it's always useful to ask "What would the Beaver do (or say)?" So, I'm wondering, in this case: what does the Jack Jr say? He's silent for the nonce. Maybe he's touring in Europe... Or deep into contract work re his day ...

"Entitled"

Hey, Blues-ists- The lovely Karen Lovely- been getting some satellite radio airplay from Bill Wax on XM-Sirius's Bluesvilles station (exit 74, you know, on the blues highway), seriously. A sign that her time is nigh. So here's my tribute to Ms. Karen, who has gigged right here here in River City- that's Blue-gene, Oregon- twice in the last couple months. Listen up!

The straight stuff - those roadhouse blues-
filling the heart of a Friday night
and Karen Lovely commanding the room

"Floating Verses"

I b'lieve this one speaks for itself:

Floating Verses

"If the river was whiskey
and I was a diving duck"-
one of those speculations
that surfaces within the work
of the I and the IV and V chords,
that medicinal blue pattern
as familiar as breath.

"Rather drink muddy water
and sleep in a hollow log"-
a definitive declaration
of active rejection
from the music Handy first heard
in an open tuning
with a table knife slide
beside a railroad station.

"Let me be your sidetrack
until your mainline c… Continue

Acoustic Blues Ain't the Only News

Some of you Seattle-ites may have caught up with Ms. Debbie Davies at the Highway 99 club last Friday, the night following her performance down here in Eugene, Ore. What follows is my tribute to the musician who mentored with John My'all in Los Angeles and then later played with Albert Collins, and won the Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist (Blues Foundation) back in '97...

A Year Ago Right Here in River CIty: "A WInter Evening"

While this month prevails, I thot I'd add this paean to Johnny Winter, that insouciant tattooed wildman. Mr. Winter performed at the WOW (Woodsmen of the World) Hall, down there on Charnelton and 8th, in Eugene, Oregon in March '08.

A Winter Evening

He performs from a chair now,
like Bo Diddley did and B.B. King still does,
but all that's lost is a sight line
from the dance floor.
Guitar still sings and stings,
understated vocals still complement the tunes,
while the histrionic drums and bass… Continue

"What They Call the Piedmont"

I read this poem at blues camp last summer to acknowledge and honor John Cephas and Phil Wiggins and I shared it with some of you in a hard copy/broadside format. The latter is still available or will be so at camp this summer, if you'd like one. It seems appropriate at this point to post it here.

What They Call the Piedmont
- for John and Phil

Consider the Blue Ridge Parkway
dipping and climbing,
rolling through the old soft velvet
of the Appalachians,
and the trickle and flow
of clear mounta… Continue

I don't know if this is really true or not--my answer was kind of tounge in cheek--the joke is on me though, what I really mean to say is that I haven't been paying attention to music younger than say, 30 years old for a very long time--and I just...
